PetSafe Microchip Cat Door, White

As per the title, now had this in use for 5 months with my kitten going in and out at least a dozen times a day, double that when she was younger.INSTALLATION:Surprisingly easy. It comes with a "template" that you stick to the door with guidelines for where to cut the hole. This kept falling off or snagging on the saw. I found it easier to simply draw a line around the inside of the part that goes on the exterior side of the door and followed that.Instructions stated to measure the height of your cat and place the flap accordingly. I didn't. As long as they can reach it, you'll be fine. My door has panels - several inches above the "ideal" height for my, then, smaller kitten. She wasn't bothered. Now, she is almost full sized and it's still a little higher than advised but, given she can jump well over a metre up from the floor if she wants to, a few CMs won't matter.Once cut, the hole was an excellent fit. Very snug. Needed a bit of *gentle* force to coax it into place. This is what you want to minimise wind and potentially water getting through if your door is exposed to rain.A jig-saw is strongly recommended if your door is wooden. Mine is some sort of cheap hardened foam coated with plastic, which is easier and, having no jig-saw, I managed fine with the saw on my Swiss Army Knife.Next, add the exterior plate and screw into place. Don't try to over-tighten the screws as you'll crack the plastic.TEACHING AN UNTRAINED CAT TO USE ITMethod - this may take longer depending on your cat and your patience.Day 1: I used a peg to hold the clear plastic door flap open. I tossed a treat through the open cat flap, and kitty gingerly went through. Repeated that several times after which she went back and forth of her own accord. Obviously any Tom (Dick or Harriet) can come in at this time so, if that's an issue, you'll need to police that yourself.Day 2: Released the flap but set to open both ways without requiring the chip to activate the door. This way the kitten got used to pushing the flap to get through.Day 3: This is the harder part. Set the flap so that the chip must be read before it will allow entry from outside. There is a delay then a click before the catch releases. So, the cat needed to learn to stick her head into the "tunnel" then wait for the click before then pushing the flap open. This took a few goes to master. She wasn't bothered by the noise of the release click even when still an otherwise skittish kitten - in fact, I think it helped in the training process.Side Note: you are advised to "register" your cat's chip on the device BEFORE you install it by holding their head in it for several seconds. My confused kitten was having none of that and kept wriggling away with a miffed meow. However, it registered when she hesitantly inched through on her first try.USAGE:My kitten - 6 months old at the time of installation - was going in and out every few minutes, all day long. She wanted to explore the exciting world outside but would get startled by a leaf, her own shadow or whatever and race back in for a fussing before venturing out again. She now stays out longer, but still come back in for a reassuring nuzzle up to a dozen times a day. The click of the flap release is audible from my lounge (two rooms away) with both room doors open. Personally, I am happy with this level of noise. I like that I can hear when she is coming in or going out. Unless you are adjudicating exams or something in the room in which it's installed, it is never so loud as to make me wish it were quieter.Battery life: I installed with Duracell batteries which, despite the frequency of use over 5 months, have yet to need replacing.Other cats: Two other cats, both male, regularly come into my garden and will often hang out with mine - often just sitting close by as if secretly communicating by telepathy. Given the chance, both would happily help themselves to her food--inside, near the cat flap--without objection from my accommodating kitten, but the flap blocks entry for them as intended, so her food is safe.OVERALL VERDICT:Prior to this I had to leave a window open for kitten to go in and out. Not advised in winter so this was a necessity. Now, though warmer, I am still very happy I have this so I'm not unwittingly feeding her friends as well as her. I wouldn't now want to be without it. A full five stars.

My 13 year old cat as always had the leisure of swanning in and out as she pleases however this involved the door being open at all times. We installed a large dog flap for our puppy and the cat would use that stealthily avoiding the bouncy XL puppy... 3 years later and having to say goodnight to our beloved puppy we were faced with a larger hole in the backdoor than required and found neighbouring cats were frequenting our home and often acting like they owned the place.Cue the microchip flap!!!What a god send! No more having to shoo the neighbours cats out and our old girl can come and go as she pleases again.Now for the down side, whilst the cat was confident in using a much larger flap previously. She wasn't as keen with this one. When it reads the microchip it makes a loud click which put her off using it. We tried everything, treats, food, even cheese (which is her favourite thing in the whole world) she just would not enter through it once it clicked. I even held it open in both directions for her, to which we achieved she would leave the house through it but still would not come back in because of the click, often choosing to sit outside the door calling to come in.It's been about 6 weeks now and she's finally grasped it, pretty much giving her no choice as we went on away for a few days, leaving a friend to take care of her food needs whilst we were away.24 hours after our return she has decided she can do it without someone having to hold the door or push her through from the outside (because that was starting to get tedious).Now I can settle knowing that she can take herself out to toilet and return without my help.My old lady is approx same size as a young adult cat, so not sure if this size would suit larger adults. However the door is secure and easy to use. It fits very well and is pretty sturdy for being plastic. The door closes securely although you can hear it in use from the next room, the wind doesn't blow it open and no heat is lost from the home in the colder months.It has 4 locking functions, in, out, in/out and locked. Easy to program to the cat's microchip (easier to do before fitting to door and may require a helping hand if your cat is extra anxious).Best thing I ever bought, besides our beautiful old girl.

Didn't take too long to install(2ppl) and works fine. The only thing I would criticise is that the screw hole covers fall out(on the outside) which means the water will get in and the screws will rust over time. So far the cat seems to like going through it but that might be because of the treats(trying to coax him through). Overall does what it says on the tin.

Bought this as a Warehouse RE-SALE PRODUCT. It arrived in a sturdy box replacing the original packaging. The contents were unopened and therefore complete and totally without any damage or scratches. I thought that it was not working as I tried to get it to register the microchip in my cats neck before getting it fitted to a more suitable replacement panel in my door and it would not register. There were 2 possible reasons, either the appliance was damaged or there was an issue with the microchip implant in my cat. I took the cat to the vet to scan for the microchip. The chip had actually migrated from the neck between his shoulders and was down the flank of his left side. The vet had to carefully scan to detect it so she agreed that we could have a second chip placed in these circumstances. I had the vet register the chip to the flap before implanting it to avoid further distress to the cat and it registered and she then double checked by testing with the actual cat. All worked extremely well so we are now having our double glazed panel replaced with a Rosewood grained panel to match the door and having the flap fitted in it. It is therefore important to check if the problem is actually to do with the chip and its location, as opposed to the flap being at fault. No instructions with this cat flap you have to go online and try to fid the correct ones. Easy enough to attach to the door but almost impossible to get the cat's chip recognised so that the door opens. The tunnel is too long and the mechanism is much too loud the cat goes away and gives up ever getting into his own house. He has now refused to use the cat flap ever and we have to open the door for him.We have purchased another cat flap of a different simpler design.

We fitted this in the smaller pane of glass at the front of our house.I removed the trim and the double glazing panel.I then purchased some clear acrylic sheet (15mm thick) cut to size (leave a few mm shy for expansion) this was siliconed in and then the trim placed back over.This left it easier to cut with a jigsaw rather than trying to cut glass/ pay a glazier ££££s.The holes were pre drilled on a slow rpm on the drill so the acrylic doesn’t break.If we leave / sell this house we can remove the flap and pane of glass and replace it easily.Where it’s positioned beside the curtain also means there’s no draft- not that we could feel one because it’s in a sheltered enough area outside.Our youngest cat (8 months) got used to this straight away. The 9 year old took a while to get used to the loud click when it recognises the chip and unlocks. He’s now using it no problem (approx 3 weeks) Our 12 year old cat still hasn’t got used to it (2 months now) but that’s just her temperament.Excuse the dirt of the flap in the photos- it gets used quite a bit!I would recommend this as we didn’t quite realise how much our cats wanted in and out of the house, it’s easy to fit (using method above) It’s a fair price as it’s well made.The unlock click does startle the cat. You’ll have to force them through it a few times then slowly hold them in position near it and they’ll get used to it themselves.Also make sure to test it on your cat to make sure it works ok before fitting!

It's okay. It keeps non-chipped cats out which is what it's mainly designed for.The problem I've found is that one of my cats has managed to work out how to push the electronic latch open from the inside and get his claws around the outside of the flap and then pull it towards himThis allows him to get his other paw under the flap and in turn, his head. This means I physically can't stop him from going outside unless I put something obstructive in front of the cat flap. That means the 'in only' function is pointless. Even when the cat flap is set to 'locked', I've physically watched him turn it with his teeth and let himself out. He's not even a big cat at just a little over 4 kilos.If the electronic release latch was perhaps designed differently this probably wouldn't be a problem but unfortunately it is what it is.On the plus side, it's easy to program to chipped cats and functions as intended in terms of keeping random cats out; it's just that it's shame it's not smart puddy cat proof. Would have been 5 stars but quite honestly I feel like I'm being generous even giving it a 3.

Quick and easy to fit with the additional adaptor using the two longer screws supplied. Don't need to put any screws into the outer holes on the adaptor.Instructions says program to your cat before installation but I don't see how you can hold your cat and the flap. A bit of negotiation and the chip was successfully learnt by the reader.15 minutes start to finish.Make sure to order 4AA batteries as they are not supplied.

I purchased this product as a replacement for an existing pet door because we were regularly getting raccoons in house (eating pet food and whatever else they could find). Installation was a bit more involved in my case due to different size of the existing cutout in the laundry room door, but this was unrelated to the product itself. I was able to successfully match to our cat's chip, though that did take a little doing; I definitely advise programming before installation (as the instructions suggest) because cats generally don't like being shoved into an opening and help there while the reader reads the chip - easier when they are lying on a bed, etc.The real challenge I had was that the local raccoon population figured out how to get through the door more quickly than my cat. I'm uncertain whether they are able to get their claws under the edge of the door and simply pull it open, but that seems most likely. We are back to locking the laundry room door at night and letting the cat out at 2am when he cries.The product otherwise functions as promised; in our case at least it simply didn't provide the security we were hoping for.

Works as it should.

We needed a door that would consistently give access to two cats during the day and when we were gone.The door works well with the chip and still has the initial batteries in it. This cat door is smaller than prior door but our 9 lbs cats have no problem going through it. The cats were use to going through a prior cat door so they were already trained. We also added a small ramp so when the cat walks up to the door they are at the right angle for the scanner to capture the signal to open the door. This door absolutely keeps the raccoons an feral cat that use to get through our old door.
