Schwalbe Marathon Plus SmartGuard Tyre, Black/Reflective

Brilliant tyre for the commute to work. Yes they do feel a bit heavy and remote at first, but I am not racing on them. What they have ensured, is that I am not pushing my bike too and from work. I am on my second set and my first set suffered no punctures in two years. Good enough for me. They are not too difficult to fit, you can do it by hand alone. However, be careful not to trap the inner tube between the rim and the tyre wall, this will cause a nip puncture. I think a few negative reviews may be due to this. Take care with inflation to ensure that the tyre is seated on the rim properly, you may need a couple of goes at this. The wire in the tyre means that there is not as much 'give' as in a non wired tyre. Once on it will give you trouble free commuting. I recommend the Schwalbe inner tubes too. They give superior air retention. I also run with slime inside from the start should disaster strike! I can leave my bike either at work or home and go to it confident that the tyres are still up! Peace of mind when winter is coming. Will not stop some prat sticking a Phillips screwdriver through the sidewall, hence the second set, but damn near perfect.

I have been using Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres in various sizes for some years; for road or gravel use I find them fine, however they can be a hard ride when inflated to the recommended pressure.. I bought a pair of these to replace the rather unsuitable tyres fitted to the folding bike I had bought. Since I bought these I have travelled around 250Kms with around 150Km on gravel cycle route, and as is normal for these tyres they show very little wear. On surfaced roads I have found them a little twitchy on corners as there very little flex in then, but they do roll fast. Be aware these are a very tight tyre to fit and there is a knack to fitting them, so if you are new to fitting tyres, be prepared for much cussing and expletives’ you also need good tyre levers none of those cheap plastic ones as sold on some online shops. Whilst these tyres are expensive they provide good value as they are long lasting and really do stop the puncture fairy from having party time. You might also have to remove your mud guards as they have a high profile.

I bought a pair of these tyres recently, and I've now had the chance to road test them on two day rides. First of all, I approached the fitting with trepidation having read some of the reviews on other sites. But, armed with the highly recommended YouTube video by Spa Cycles which explains how to fit them without using levers, I had them on easily within 20 minutes or so. As I'm one of the least practical people on the planet, that's good going! The "trick" is to secure the tyre using toe-clips, string or cable-ties, then gradually work round the tyre, creating slack by "bedding" the tyre in the rim well, making sure the inner isn't snagged. It's much easier to watch than explain, but if I can do it, believe me it can't be that bad. I guess that the wheel rim type will make a difference to how easy the fitting process is; mine are Mavik 319s. Anyway, I'm now confident that I could fix a puncture on the road if I need to. Not bad for a numpty like me. The ride seems fine. I don't detect any appreciable slowing effect over my previous tyres from the extra puncture protection. I'm using them on a loaded touring bike (20kg spread over 4 panniers). I'm about to embark on a lengthy tour (4000+ miles) with these tyres, so will report back more fully on how they perform. But for now, it's thumbs up. Update: I've now completed 2500 miles using these tyres and I've found them to be remarkably durable. Firstly, I've had no punctures, despite riding over diverse surfaces including rough chalk, potholed lanes, and broken-glass on city cycle paths. I ran over a thorn, which I removed from the tyre with no problem at all. The wear seems light, and I like the light-reflective band on the tyre edge. I'd recommend thes to any touring or commuter cyclist who is fed up of getting punctures. So, only a partial review, but I thought it might be useful for anyone who is put off by the fitting issues.

Strong durable and stylish. I cycle to work every day and needed something that is robust enough for my 10 mile/day commute. Having tried several different brands and products over the years I've finally found a tyre that not only looks good, but is manufactured to last. When putting the tyres on my wheels I knew immediately that these were of a quality that defies their price. I've had them on for 4 months now and I'm yet to have a puncture so the puncture proof technology is clearly working. I do make sure they are pumped up at all times though to ensure the wear is kept to a minimum. I know I can rely on these tyres on my commute. Speed wise, the thin nature of the tyres and the well designed tread enable me to effortlessly maintain a good speed on the flat. The choice of colour ensures you can get a tyre to match your bike. I would not go back to any other brand now and I would definitely purchase these tyres again.

These tyres are rumoured to be pretty tough and thus good for commuting. I was wary of fitting these due to the fact they weighed 3 times as much as the tyres I removed; however they roll very well indeed. I reckon my bike is faster with these (probably because the tyres I removed were knobbly grass tyres) and I have a far greater confidence in where I put my bike now. I also like the high-viz stripe round the tyre - every little helps in the visibility corner! I would definitely recommend these (in fact I now have the same brand & tyre on my other 2 bikes!)

C'est le troisième vélo avec lesquels j'ai toujours utilisé ces pneus. Jamais eu de crevaisons, environ 30,000 km de parcouru jusqu'à présent avec les trois vélo. Efficace pavé et gravel. Un peu plus de friction qu'un pneus lisse. Plus cher mais dure plus longtemps. Plus confortable et très visible le soir !

通勤用クロスバイクで使用しています。 標準のタイヤがすぐにバーストしたので強靭なタイヤを探していたところ、こちらにたどり着きました。 シビアな人は重くなると言いますが、通勤で使用するレベルにおいてはその重さが枷になることはありません。タイムアタックしているわけではないので。 とにかく精神衛生上パンク耐性が上がったことはとても良く、余程イレギュラーな走行をしなければパンクは滅多にしないと感じました。 レースには向かないでしょうが、日常使いには素晴らしいタイヤです。 次回もこちらをリピートします！

Très bon pneus.

A year ago I built an electric bike for commuting. I pieced it together as inexpensively as possible and found that skimping on the tires was a mistake. After five flats in as many months I got very serious about finding a tire that would allow me to confidently ride to work and then get back home. The Marathon Plus has great reviews with a reputation for over delivering when it comes to avoiding flats. Yes, it is a bit heavier but there doesn't seem to be much rolling resistance, it makes for a comfortable ride. Within two weeks I ran over a two inch nail that would have been a blow-out. The nail went in about half way and was knocked sideways by hitting the fender. It pulled right out, no loss of air pressure, and I was on my way. If I was skeptical before I no longer am. We just ordered a second pair here from Amazon for a Schwinn mountain bike that has been converted into a college campus bike for our daughter. We have peace of mind that our daughter will have reliable tires (see picture). Also, reviews I have read give concern to it being difficult to mount the tires. I used velcro ties, some use zip ties, to make the mounting a lot easier. There is a video on Youtube I am grateful for finding.(search, "How to fit a Marathon Plus Tyre.mp4"). Enjoy!
