Is this good for a newbie looking to get into shortwave?

While i like this radio, i would suggest the Tecsun PL-330, The Tecsun PL-330 is a Very Good Radio, Get a couple extra Batteries for Incase the Power goes OUT you have more Run Time, Next get a descent antenna, like maybe a 21 foot reel antenna AND a MLA-30+ these are descent for the Price.

how is the sensitivy for dxing am and fm shortwave ? How is the sensitivy for recording on am/fm bands ?

it is Not Bad, BUT get a descent Antenna, like a MLA-30+ as this is a Decent inexpensive antenna, or string a 100foot long Wire into a Tree wire into a Grounded UN for descent reception. a Magnetic Loop can also benefit for AM/MW, FM get a 21 foot reel type clip onto telescoping antenna.
