Choice Reviews , Outstanding Academic Title Techniques and systems for processing food scraps, manure, yard debris, paper, and more Turning waste into wealth sounds too good to be true, but many worm farmers are finding that vermicomposting is a reliable way to do just that. Vermicastโa biologically active, nutrient-rich mix of earthworm castings and decomposed organic matterโsells for $400 or more per cubic yard. Compare that to regular compost, sold at about $30 a cubic yard, and youโll see why vermicomposting has taken root in most countries and on every continent but Antarctica. Vermicomposting is also one of the best sustainable solutions for organic waste management. Vermicomposting manure and crop wastes on farms improves crop yields while reducing demand for off-farm inputs. Vermicast has higher nutrient levels and lower soluble salt content than regular compost, and it improves soil aeration, porosity, and water retention. Plus, vermicast suppresses plant diseases and insect attacks. Municipalities, businesses, community gardens, schools, and universities can set up vermicomposting operations to process food residuals and other waste materials. The Worm Farmerโs Handbook details the ins and outs of vermicomposting for mid- to large-scale operations, including how to recycle organic materials ranging from food wastes and yard trimmings to manure and shredded office paper. Vermicomposting expert Rhonda Sherman shares what she has learned over twenty-five years working with commercial worm growers and researchers around the world. Her profiles of successful worm growers across the United States and from New Zealand to the Middle East and Europe describe their proven methods and systems. This book digs into all the details, including: Choosing the right production system Regulatory issues and developing a business and marketing plan Finding and managing feedstocks Pre-composting: why and how to do it Monitoring an active worm bed Harvesting, screening, testing, packaging, and storing vermicast Markets for earthworms and vermicast Food security: how vermicast benefits soils and plants Keys to success: avoiding common pitfalls From livestock farms and restaurants to colleges, military bases, and prisons, Sherman details why and how commercial-scale vermicomposting is a fast-growing, sustainable solution for organic waste management. The Worm Farmerโs Handbook is the first and only authoritative how-to guide that goes beyond small-scale operations and demystifies the science and logistics of the fascinating process that is vermicomposting. Review: Comprehensive and Extremely Practical - The Worm Farmerโs Handbook is an outstanding resource for anyone serious about vermicomposting on a larger scale. Itโs well-written, thorough, and packed with practical information for farms, schools, municipalities, and businesses. I really appreciated the step-by-step guidance, real-world examples, and detailed explanations of how to set up and manage systems successfully. Whether youโre expanding a small worm operation or starting something big, this book gives you the knowledge and confidence to do it right. A must-read for anyone passionate about sustainability and soil health. Review: A well of practical experience and knowledge underpinned by clarity of expression. - I chose this book because I needed a comprehensive understanding of worm farming. Rhonda Sherman's book turned out to be an excellent starting point. It builds upward from basics to a review of operating worm farm enterprises around the world. The briefs on how these worm farms started, their organisation, and how they addressed their challenges is very informative. Particularly memorable is how the various actors named their enterprises. The book provides gripping details of how the wriggly neighbours on our planet contribute to mankind's survival. This book is recommended reading for farmers, policy makers and all those keen to promote sustainable agriculture.

By far the best book on worm farming I have read. Wish I had read this one first!
I have read several books on worm farms. Most of them actually have very little real information, written by a worm farm hobbyist. All the real Information could have been written on a small pamphlet, but that does make money. Not this book! It is written by a true scientific expert! It packed fully of information that isnโt in any of the other books I have read! While she is writing for People who are professional large and medium scale farmers, I recommend it for anyone who is serious about farming worms and wants to really learn about it, even has a hobby there is too much good information in here to miss.

Excellent content
The book has excellent information in an understandable writing style. The author incorporates research data and actual experiences in its content. If you are interested in vermicompost and raising worms for recycling food waste you will refer to it many times. The only negative content for me was a lot of information on personal travels to other countries and their methods and practices which are not practical here.

Complete and Authoritative
An excellent book. Tells you everything you need to know to get a medium to large worm farm established. Ms. Sherman also tells you what the pitfalls are, gives examples of worm farms that are well run. I would even recommend this book for those who just want to have a small operation due to the completeness of the manual. Can't recommend highly enough.

SHOULD YOU INTEND TO START A WORM FARM OF ANY SIZE THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK YOU WILL NEED
Based on previous reviews I decided on this book and I am definitely not disappointed. The is sufficient but not too much technical, scientific and practical information in an easy-to-read style. I recommend this book to both the new and the not so new worm farmer. Thankyou Rhonda you have probably saved me plenty of dollars and tears.
