Hmm, good question, but never had the need to, so sorry can't advise. But, it is very sharp and contains small electronics, could flag a response.

What is the point of the hold feature? why would i hold a temperature?

Holding temp is the temp at which food is supposed to be kept at. Example, for cold food FDA standard is 41 degrees. So the holding temp feature on the thermometer is a temp that can be set, in this case, 41 degrees. If the temp rises above 41 degrees the thermometer will start beeping as a warning.
