Detailer Basic Woodburning Kit

I have looked for and tried several different soldering iron type devices to burn a signature and description in the things that I have made for friends etc. The issue was that it was difficult to write with your hand so far from the burner tip and to keep a consistent temperature it always seemed too hot or would cool off in the middle of a word so I had to try to slow my writing to keep it going. I decided to bite the bullet and try a more robust machine. This was a complete mistake because I should have done this first!!! I am incredibly impressed with this machine. Right out of the box it preformed flawlessly and it is a breeze to use. Granted I am not planning on using it to its full potential by taking up Pyrography because I am only writing with it. So essentially I ended up with some tips that I will not use. I would have liked to have just bought the parts I needed but I could not find the individual pieces I wanted. All of the kits they sell on their website are were too robust for what I wanted so Amazon was the only place I could find a kit that was reasonable enough for me to take the plunge. I did go ahead and buy a ball type tip from their website specifically for script writing as in a signature. They said there that those tips take longer to heat up and cool off, but honestly it gets up to temperature in less than 30 seconds. I understand now why the other reviewer seemed so excited about this burner and I completely agree. It is definitely one of the best purchases I have ever made from Amazon and I have made hundreds over the years. Please if you are even slightly thinking about purchasing this unit do not hesitate I can honestly wholeheartedly recommend it. One more thing they have tons of things you can get to enhance your Colwood Detailer on their website and customer support appears to be second to none. This kit comes with everything you need to get started in pyrography. It comes the detailer controller that has very good heat control. One replaceable tip pen and 3 very usable nibs or tips. A writing nib, a skew and a shader. Those 3 tips have a multitude of uses. The tips heat up and cool down quickly. The kit also comes with a couple polishers for cleaning carbon from your tips and an excellent book. Well worth the cost and much easier to use and learn on than a solder type burner with solid tips. You can't go wrong with this kit.

Did not use myself, got this as a gift for a family member, and he raves about it. Says it is very easy to use and meets all his needs. Was able to figure out how to get it to work with no problem

This is a good book for more advanced woodburners than I am. I am just a beginner. The book did provide me with additional techniques that I am already using. As I become better with practice, I will be able to use the design patterns provided in the book. If you are a beginner, I recommend Pyrography Basics by Lora S. Irish, and Woodburning Basics by Dick Armstrong. These are also sold through Amazon. I have been practicing a lot with the burner, and I am happy with its performance. It comes with 3 tips. I expected 3 different tips, but two were the same type. You will need more tips than the three. I ordered a number of additional tips from Colwood.

My experience with wood burning has always been limited to Hobby Store models that range from $10 - $30. I had a few wood burning projects I wanted to tackle and decided to finally spend the money and get a semi-professional wood burner. The difference is night and day! First, the tip heats up very quickly - no more waiting 10 minutes. It also cools a lot faster. This system is a replaceable tip system that allows you to change tips immediately because it also includes a tip puller so you can change tips in seconds - no more unscrewing tips over and over again. You just use the small tool and pull the tip straight out of the handle. The selection of tips available for this system is very comprehensive. It comes with 3 tips that will let you do just about anything, but when you are ready to expand your work, there are dozens of tips available to help you get the job done. If you are into wood burning or buying this as a gift for someone who is interested in wood burning, this kit is worth the extra money. It may cost more, but it will increase your productivity at least 10x. I am very satisfied with this kit and wished I would have "upgraded" years ago.

OH uh-MY GAWD. This is the best wood burner ever. I've been working with a hobby-quality burner for over a year to create items for my Etsy shop. I've been yearning for a professional burner. And HERE IT IS. I used it for the first time last night. It heated up, lit'rally, in seconds. The variable temperature adjusts like A BOSS. And this burner requires NO effort. I mean, it cuts through wood like a hot knife through butter. It amazing. In the past, it would take me 3-4 days to finish a plaque for my shop. Now, I can get one done in ONE NIGHT. It's cut my work time by 2/3. This means I can make more product, that's higher quality, at a faster pace. So, so awesome. I did so much research before buying this kit. I was going to buy a nibsburner, but just the main setup was around $140. This Colwood package includes SO MUCH MORE and you spend the same amount of money. I've had the Cub model burner for the past 28 years it still works just fine and works great if I'm traveling around this one that's on Amazon is just heavier duty and bigger but I can guarantee it will work just as good if not better since the wattage is actually higher. The only reason that I have purchased this one is that I had some stuff to do and couldn't figure out in the pile that's on my workbench where I exactly put it and figured that was a good enough excuse to buy this one since I've drooled over it for the past 20 some years so now I have to and they all use the exact same pen and tips
