Mercury-Free, Glass, Oral Thermometer C/F

worth the money

Works really well. Unfortunately my daughter dropped it, breaking the glass. Bought the same one again & am still very happy with it. Accurate & more reliable than flakey digital equivalents to me. For the uninitiated, know that these kinds of thermometers require that you give them a rather aggressive/vigorous “wrist snap” to reset the temperature.

Only the metal tip is supposed to go under the tongue. It falls out of the mouth unless not inserted deeply. It is supposed to register the temperature after 3 minutes. After 10 minutes it only goes up to 97 degrees (F). It's necessary to hold it in mouth the whole time. Not like the classic thermometers that insert easily, work fast and produce accurate results. Obtained credit from amazon. Nothing compares with the original mercury thermometers. This is modeled after it but a poor and non-functional substitute. Odd notion that a smooth tip of long object only 1/4 inch will stay in one's mouth and detect one's temperature.

UPDATE at end: Very accurate! I am shy of the digital thermometers and feel I can sterilize the glass thermometer much more reliably. I’ve been using this thermometer daily since March - I have two and occasionally swap and also benchmark them against each other - same reading every time. These are hard to shake down, apparently the media does not weigh as much as mercury and takes much more effort to shake down. So much so I created a paracord rig to “spin” mine down as I think I was developing shoulder issues. If someone has a more brilliant shake down method, I’m open to suggestions. UPDATE: I dropped one of mine so I ordered two replacements - these now come with a tool for shaking them down - also in reading the manual, manufacturer suggests shake down to 36 C however I have been “spinning” mine down into the tip.

Are you a fan of the accuracy of the old mercury and glass thermometers? This one, while containing no mercury, will please you. It take a bit longer to give a reading (around 3 minutes for oral use) but gives a more accurate reading than many digital thermometers. It also comes in a nice plastic case for travel. The downside: this is a glass thermometer. While if does have a case, the case will not protect the thermometer from impacts. We owned this thermometer 2 days before it was accidentally knocked off a table and shattered on the floor. It is fairly fragile and I wouldn't recommend it for homes with children, rambunctious animals or klutzy adults (like me).

This resets with a quick snap FLICK of the wrist--not a waving like it's hot motion. Like in any TV show or movie made before the 2000s. One side will show a long blue line (ignore this) and the other view will show the actual temperature reading. This is due to the properties of glass being glass--it's glass, so you can see through it. It diffracts light and color. Like looking at a straw in a glass of water. It takes three ACTUAL minutes...set a timer. It really doesn't move at all for the first minute-and-a-half. So make sure you wait three real minutes. I guess it's *slightly* more complicated than screwing in a lightbulb...but at least you don't have to deal with dead thermometer batteries while also being sick.

When viewed from one angle, there is a blue line that goes all the way to the top of the thermometer. When viewed from a different angle, there is a second blue line, very similar in appearance, which is the actual reading. This thermometer is very difficult to shake down. When I got the product, the reading line was at a normal body temperature, and after trying every suggested technique, I could not get the line to budge. Finally, I put the thermometer in a clean sock, bulb toward the toe, grabbed the open end of the sock, and swung it as fast as I could over my head. This worked; the line went all the way down into the bulb. Now, after wiping the thermometer down with an alcohol wipe as directed on the back of the packaging, I put it under my tongue for 4 minutes and it read a normal body temperature. I tried this sock swing technique more than once and it does the trick perfectly every time; the line either goes all the way down into the bulb, or almost all the way, in any case, well below 96 degrees. I wouldn't feel right giving this product less than three stars, because it does actually work. You can use it to read your temperature. But I wouldn't feel right giving it more than three stars, because it is so tremendously difficult to use. Why the manufacturer decided to include in the product another line that looks just like the reading but isn't, is somewhat mystifying. And the fact that it's so very difficult to shake down is also disappointing.
