Enjoyed it
Bought it on a whim and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fairly dark subject matter but handled well. The art is meh, but didn't distract from the story. Sure, its predictable, but it was still entertaining.

Loved this
I really liked this a lot, I'll most likely continue to the other volumes. This has a ramped up Female James Bond, with a Logan type attitude.

A great comic. I was a little dubious and curious about this book. I am glad my curiosity won out. In Secret Empire Balck Widow was killed. I was not sure is the whole thing was to be reset or what but I was sure she would be back. This comic does not go into the detail of how she was brought back, it is mentioned in the recap, but does deal with some of the fall out of Secret Empire. Peoples perception of Cap (Steve Rogers), and Black Widow being technically dead working behind the scenes. For a book call "No Restraints Play", and such an excellent cover, I was a bit scared and disappointed in the art work at the beginning. I thought it was too colourful and happy-ish, but I am glad to say it was the perfect setup as it shows Nat as she is seen as the hero, where as, (like the writer say in the acknowledgments page), she works better from the shadows. The way they term is I "held back by the Avengers". Madripoor is the perfect back place for Nat to blow off some steam and be unleashed. If there was ever a crime that need vengeance it is this. The perfect criminals for her to be unleashed on. A great comic the fights in here are swift and brutal. I like how the artwork get subtly darker as the story goes along. There is an full page cover of each issue at the beginning of each chapter, and the variants of issue 1 in the cover gallery at the back.

Different take on Black Widow

The Black Widow brings deadly violence to a child abuse ring in Madripoor. A fast paced and bloody thriller with fundamental tonal problems, woeful dialogue and an ending that's totally inconsistent with her character throughout the rest of the book. Hmm. This is an odd book. The subject matter is deadly serious, so the typical Marvel quips feel very off. The Soska's needed to play this much straighter to match the deep darkness of the subject. It also looks like it's aimed at a younger comic book audience. But the dismemberment and child torture is very much not aimed at younger readers. I mean, they'll probably take it in their stride, but still... It would be good to read a Black Widow story that didn't revolve around the two themes she's lazily routinely given. Being blackmailed by the threat of releasing yet another set of darkest secrets. Or child abuse with echoes of her past in the Red Room. Like Waid and Samnee before them, the Soska's fail to find a new angle. Editorial constraint or lack of imagination? Hard to say. Also like Waid and Samnee before them, the Soska's don't have a clue who the Black Widow is. The Soska's notes, republished here from the first and last issues, claim deep familiarity with her books. Maybe they got her mixed up with Red Sonja? It's not Nat. Captain America and all the other familiar faces who crop up are similarly unrecognisable. Everyone feels off. The art reminds me of Brett Blevins on the original New Mutants run all those years ago. If is distinctive, bold and chunky. A nice change from generic Marvel art. Unfortunately it plays it's part in the fundamental tonal issues of this book. It's a very comicy style that would work better in a different book. The script deserves a special mention. Some of the worst I've read in a Marvel book. How many times do they have to say "No Restraints Play" on each page, let alone in each frame? All the characters sound the same, and some of them are given some horribly lengthy exposition. The Soska's give a special mention to the editor in their notes at the end. The editor was on holiday as far as I can tell. If you're going to go super dark, really comit. Dump the quips and banter, and embrace the serious drama that you've set up. And if you're going to go for a twist, don't make it one you've made super clear the Black Widow would have spotted immediately. You've written her as super intuitive but, oops, super dim when the plot demands it.
